Dead Key Fob Battery
Modern key fobs let us open doors, trunks, and tailgates with ease without the need for a physical car key. Some key fobs have a built in key that can be utilized to start our vehicles. However, these devices depend on a tiny battery that is the power source for their remote functions. If the battery dies then the key fob cannot transmit the signal needed to turn on the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to fix a dead car key fob.
First, you must determine if the key fob is actually dead. If it seems to be dead, you will require replacing the batteries. You can do it yourself by taking the fob off its clip, or using a flat-head screwdriver. You should not apply too much force or you may damage the fob. It's also important to be sure you are replacing the correct type of battery. Certain models may require a different battery. You can determine what type of battery your car requires in the owner's manual, or go to an Interstate All Battery Center and get a specialist in battery care to assist you.
If the key fob isn't dead, you can revive it by moving closer to your car. The majority of key fobs employ RFID (radio frequency identification), which only works at a short range. The ignition system needs to be able to recognize the signal. If you are able to move just a few inches closer to your car, it might unlock or even start.
Many car manufacturers have backup mechanisms that is activated when the key fob battery is dead. Ford, for example has a slot which is dedicated to the key fob. If properly inserted the key fob will activate the engine of the car. Go through the owner's manual to find information on where to find the slot and how to insert the key fob. Broken Key Ring
The chip inside the key fob is the one that communicates with your car's immobilizer system to start the engine. If this chip becomes damaged or there are programming errors, the key fob will not be able send the correct identification code, and your car won't start. A damaged transponder may be caused by physical damage to the key shell or wear and wear and tear on the contact pads.
There are often warning signs on your dashboard when the key fob is having trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These can include error messages, flashing lights or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. If you are noticing these warnings contact your local locksmith immediately for key fob replacement or repair.
If you carry a lot of keys, it is easy to scratch your key ring. This can cause the fob to crack in half. This is one of the most common causes of a broken car keys. Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs has snapped off the tiny key loop at the top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or metal that is soft. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded the surface to make it more durable. But I'm guessing that's not helping.
I've also attempted to wrap the broken the ring with clear tape, but it didn't work to be any better. It's a shame because I use the tiny split ring to keep my keys in the right place.
If the case of the key fob is damaged, you could often remove it and replace the battery if the battery isn't dead. There are online kits available however they're only a temporary solution. It may be quicker to have it repaired by a professional. Alternately, you may find a replacement case at the home improvement store or a locksmith. They're not likely to be as costly as the new key fob.
